Summer Track Chat: Jeff LaCoste

The Bishop Guertin star sums up his senior season, life outside of track, his college plans, and more.

MS: LOOKING BACK ON THE SEASON DID YOU ACCOMPLISH YOUR GOALS AND WHAT YOU SET OUT TO DO?

JL: I accomplished my goals of running the mile in a 4:13, winning the 1600m at the New England Championships, and also qualifying for the New Balance Nationals elite mile.

MS: WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF IN YOUR CAREER?

JL: I am most proud qualifying for Cross Country Footlocker Nationals in San Diego, winning 3 events in the same day at the NH Indoor Track State Meet, and winning the 1600m at the Outdoor Track New England Championships

MS: ARE THERE ANY CREATIVE OR FUN WORKOUTS YOU DO?

JL: My coach often had me run 800 and 400 meter workouts.  He always let me go all out (100%) on the last one and I would always surprise myself and run faster than I expected!

MS: WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES OUTSIDE OF TRACK?

JL: Outside of Track I enjoy playing basketball, swimming, golfing, and hanging with my friends.

MS: DO YOU HAVE ANY SUPERSTITIONS OR RITUALS?

JL: During the season, I need to eat a big bag of spinach every other day with my dinner. It makes me feel strong and confident!

MS: WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE PRO TRACK ATHLETE?

JL: Bernard Lagat is my favorite pro track athlete because he runs many of the same distance events as I do and has had so much success in his career such as winning the Millrose Mile 8 years in a row.  Lagat always makes a good race to watch because he is so consistent in running fast and smart races.

MS: WHO ARE YOUR RIVALS OR TOUGHEST COMPETITORS?

JL: My toughest competitors are Robert Allen, John Murray, and Chad Noelle.  Robert Allen and I raced multiple times throughout the year and the races were always extremely close.  We were side by side during cross country at the New England Championships and also raced down to the kick in the 1600 during the Outdoor Track New England Championships.  John Murray and Chad Noelle were in many of my competitive races such as XC Footlocker Regionals and Nationals, Millrose Games, and the Glen Loucks Games.

MS: WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR NEXT SEASON?

JL: This coming cross country season as a freshman at High Point University, I plan on being the best freshman cross country runner in the Big South conference.  In the track season I hope to continue closing in on the 4 minute mile mark.  Anything under a 4:07 during my freshman year would be great accomplishment.
