Penn Relays High School Championship of America Relays Preview

Distance Relays

Boys Distance Medley Relay

National High School Record: 9:49.78, South Lakes High School, Virginia, 2001 (Richard Smith 3:03.2, Justin Smyser 50.2, Kanda Karmo 1:56.6, Alan Webb 3:59.8)

Penn Relays Record: 9:59.66, South Lakes High School, Virginia, 2001 (Richard Smith 3:07.2, Justin Smyser 50.4, Kanda Karmo 1:57.4, Alan Webb 4:04.7)

2015 Champion: 10:12.10, La Salle Academy, Rhode Island (Matthew Bouthillette 3:09.44, Cameron Morenzi 50.96, Daniel Paiva 1:57.2, Jack Salisbury 4:14.52)

Watch live: 5:55 PM Friday

The FAVORITE: Loudon Valley (VA)

The CHALLENGERS: River Dell (NJ), Concord Carlisle (MA), Fordham Prep (NY)

Why We're Excited: To see what Drew Hunter splits! If Concord Carlisle keeps it close, Hunter could have a real battle on his hands as anchor Thomas Ratcliffe had the fastest split of 4:02 at New Balance Nationals Indoor. If everyone runs in no man's land, how fast is Hunter capable of splitting alone? We talked to him ahead of his final Penn Relays and first Championship of America final -- he has won the 3K and Mile here -- and he wants nothing less than a win, even if he "goes out in 1:55 and dies."

Girls Distance Medley Relay

National High School Record: 11:22.23, Harvard-Westlake High School, California, 2011 (Amy Weissenbach 3:24.85, K.C. Cord 58.45, Lauren Hansson 2:13.7, Cami Chapus 4:45.23)

Penn Relays Record: 11:28.86, Tatnall High School, Delaware, 2012 (Reagan Anderson 3:35.7, Lindsay Voltz 57.8, Julie Williams 2:12.5, Haley Pierce 4:42.9)

2015 Champion: 11:51.85, Patriot High School, Virginia (Candace Jones 3:42.82, Erin Andrewlevich 57.59, Sierra Bieberr 2:21.29, Rachel McArthur 4:50.16)

Watch live: 6:20 PM Thursday

The FAVORITE: Lake Braddock (VA)

The CHALLENGERS: Saratoga Springs (NY), Palos Verdes (CA)

Why We're Excited: To see what Kate Murphy splits on the anchor leg. The Bruins enter as the favorites thanks to their 4:39 miler, who won the 3K here in exciting fashion last year. Lake Braddock finished runners-up at New Balance Nationals Indoor behind national high school record holders North Rockland of New York, who cannot race at Penn because their anchor, Katelyn Tuohy, is still in middle school.

Boys 4x800m

National High School Record: 7:28.75, Long Beach Poly, High School, California, 2011

Penn Relays Record: 7:30.67, Ablemarle High School, Virginia, 2009 (Garrett Bradley 1:55.4, Zach Vrhovac 1:50.6, Luke Noble 1:55.4, Anthony Kostelac 1:49.3)

2015 Champion: 7:38.38, St. Elizabeth Technical, Jamaica (Romario Guthrie 1:56.86, Paul Tate 1:52.84, Shemar Salmon 1:56.51, Jauavney James 1:52.18)

Watch live: 4:00 PM Saturday

The FAVORITES: St. Elizabeth Technical (JAM), St. Jago (JAM)

The CHALLENGERS: State College (PA), Jamaica College (JAM), West Islip (NJ), Morris Hills (NJ), Kingston College (JAM)

Why We're Excited: Anything can happen. The two favorites up front in Jamaican schools St. Elizabeth and St. Jago have about 10 seconds on the rest of the field, which becomes anyone's race for top American squad. State College of Pennsylvania is the top seed here, thanks to a 7:45.6, third place finish at New Balance Nationals Indoor.

Girls 4x800m

National High School Record: 8:43.12, Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Maryland, 2008 (Dominique Lockhart 2:13.0, Amirah Johnson 2:08.6, Brittany Ogunomokun 2:11.9, Tasha Stanley 2:09.6)

Penn Relays Record: 8:37.71, Vere Tech, Jamaica (Charmane Howell 2:11.3, Claudine Williams 2:11.1, Janice Turner 2:12.1, Inez Turner 2:03.2)

2015 Champion: 9:01.31, Holmwood Tech, Jamaica (Shaniekie Watson 2:17.56, Chrissiani May 2:12.95, Britney Campbell 2:19.95, Lisa Buchanan 2:10.87)

Watch live: Friday 1:10 PM

The FAVORITE: Edwin Allen (JAM), Mamaroneck (NY)

The CHALLENGERS: E.C. Glass (VA)

Why We're Excited: To see Katie DeVore dab. The senior from Mamaroneck split 2:08 and dabbed at the finish line when she crossed first at New Balance Nationals. An American team has not won the High School Girls 4x800m Championship of America in three years -- since Oliva Baker and Columbia High School in 2013 -- but Mamaroneck could get it done.
